The year 1999 marked the birth of Changer, a one-man side project of then Shiva drummer Kristján, but soon to be a full band. Kristján wrote and recorded the first album, January 109, released in February 2000, before relocating from Akureyri to Reykjavik in May.
After numerous incarnations a full line-up was established (Magnús – vocals, Jóhann – guitar, Hudson – guitar, Berti – bass, Kristján – drums), and in 2001 the ep Inconsistency was recorded and released. Changer had by that time already proven themselves as one of the most up-and-coming live acts in the Icelandic metal scene and continued to grow stronger as more songs from the next album were penned and played live. After a lengthy recording process the album Scenes was released in February 2004.
The year 2005 turned out to be a real turning point for Changer. The band played their first show abroad at Nevelfest in Belgium and received quite good response despite being the only foreign band on the bill.
After lengthy considerations, founder and drummer Kristján and long-time guitarist Jóhann decided to split the band in late summer 2005 due to musical differences. They instantly started writing new material and quickly recruited bassist Gísli (former frontman for the Icelandic death metal band Sororicide) and singer Egill (ex Munnriður). And so, within a few months, Changer had taken a new and heavier musical direction. In December the band headed to the studio to start recording a new ep, and during the recording process added a second guitarist, Fannar (Denver).
With this line-up Changer played relentlessly in Iceland, and even though some argued if the band should maybe have changed their name, all agreed that the new songs and the new line-up more than justified all the changes of the year before. The band toured Belgium, Holland and Germany in May 2006 and got mutual praise from their fans abroad as in Iceland: Something special was happening.
The ep Breed The Lies was released on June 1st, and has since received positive reviews around Europe and the USA. In addition to that it has been named as one of the 20 best albums released in Iceland in 2006 – even if it’s only an ep. For the rest of the year Changer continued to play gigs in Iceland as well as writing material for the next full-length album.
At the end of 2006 Fannar left the band on good terms, and after two successful gigs as a four-piece, Jóhann’s brother, Unnar, was added to the fold. With this line-up Changer supported both Cannibal Corpse and Rotting Christ, but in August 2007 Gísli decided to quit the band to pursue other interests. Jón Karl, an old friend of Jóhann, filled in on bass for a short time.
As the recording for the band's next album drew near, it became clear that the members didn't agree on what musical direction the band should take, so Changer broke up at the end of 2007. The band leaves behind two full albums, two EP's, and countless gigs both in Iceland and abroad.
It is likely that the band's last two demos, including all the songs intended for the album, will be made public in some form in the coming weeks or months. Stay tuned.
