After five years of radio silence, German melodic death metallers Mourning Caress return to the front with the successor of their in 2002 released debut record Imbalance. It’s entitled Inner Exile and it features tracks that were written during those five years, while it was recorded in two weeks at the Soundlodge Studio in Northern Germany.
Inner Exile’s production immediately gives me a better feeling than all those overdone and too catchy melodeath records that are getting released nowadays. Mourning Caress’ songwriting is of a capable level; most of their music consists of fine drum work, excellent double guitar play and a dose of hard rocking metal. The melodies mainly in ‘As Long As We Are One’, ‘Nothing Is Lost’ and ‘Close To Collapse’ are beautiful and remind me of the fine melodies of for example Amoral and Detonation. What I do like less on this record are Mohr’s singing capabilities. He only handles one vocal-style throughout the whole album, his shouting kind-of singing is becoming irritating at a certain point of time. It makes me think of metalcore-singers, and because of Mourning Caress’ melodic and emotional parts the next thought is ‘emocore’… not really a style you want to think of while listening to an overall seen all right metal record. So except for the sometimes annoying vocals, Mourning Caress managed to release a qualitative fine melodic death metal album that will be liked by the fans of the genre. Now just hope that it won’t take them another five years to release their next CD.
