Who else to review Jack Slater but me?! The name doesn’t ring a bell? Then fuck off! You need to go check out the movie Last Action Hero and be educated! Other than that, we’re dealing with a German death metal band that has been around for over ten years now.
Jack Slater unleashes their third full length upon the world, entitled Blut/Macht/Frei. Overall I don’t really get the feeling I’m listening to something utterly special, but a decent slab of death metal is certainly offered on this disc. The band sings its lyrics in German, but since it is death metal I’m not too bothered by this. The production of this album is quite nice to listen to, which is a relief because the songs are not that interesting. They do attempt some nice intermezzos in their songs to keep the attention, yet to my ears they fail.
A fun thing is the use of a guest saxophone (which is very jazzy) on the 22-minute three track opus ‘Narbe’, which makes for a refreshing sound in the brutal bashing which is Jack Slater. Yet it does not save the entire album. Now it does look a bit like I really don’t like this disc, which is not true. The band produced a nice effort in death metal and I bet a lot of Germans will like this, but I know I’ve heard most of the material of Blut/Macht/Frei before. And that’s too bad. Still, the name rules, so extra credit for that! Line Up: Sobo - guitar Chris - bass Horn - vocals Kevin - guitar David - drums Track Listing: 01. Blut/Macht/Frei 02. Toten 03. Amnestia 04.
