Alabama Thunderpussy has got a new vocalist and likes to know that. In fact, the band likes to pay a lot of attention to this new album since the one and only mister Ken Kelly (also working for Manowar) has been responsible for the, by the way magnificent, artwork. Let’s see if the hard rock/metal works out (again).

To be honest, I cannot be honest, because I have a weakness for this kind of music. I actually don’t care about bad guys attitudes, motorcycles or gallons of beer unless they listen to music like is present on Open Fire, then they’ll become my best friends. That is, because the music on this album seems to be honest and originates straight from the passion towards hard rock with great senses for melodies.

Opener ‘The Cleansing’ could be considered as a safe opener which will give the old fans the opportunity to get familiar with the new vocals. But afterwards, these vocals are taken into a little different direction with highlights on the chorus of ‘Words Of The Dying Man’ and the almighty ‘Whiskey War’. It truly is a revelation to hear the band make quick changes in the song patterns without sounding a bit messy.

The greatest thing however is the balance between all the songs on Open Fire which represents a nice way of songwriting without loosing the idea of being a hard rock band. There are no samples, synths or background sounds put in the record, even when the two guitars are battling against each other in ‘The Beggar’. As a result of that, Alabama Thunderpussy has made their best record so far which is full of fast heavy riffs, great melodies and a new twist due to a new singer. I’d say every heavy music fan should listen to this band, honestly.
