Ydin - Silvottuna Ja Häpäistynä

70%
Ydin is a Finnish death metal band that chose to keep its lyrics in its native language. Now that’s not really a problem with death metal, because most of the times I can’t understand what is being grunted anyway. One MCD has been released in 2004, and now another one hits the scene; catchy entitled Silvottuna Ja Häpäistynä. Whatever that means.

Well this record containing five songs is a good effort in thrash/death metal. The music sounds nice and brutal, but I have a little problem with remembering what is going on in the songs. That’s a pity, because when I put my attention to the songs I do hear some nice things going on, it’s just that nothing sticks. I’m pretty sure Ydin reminds me of another death metal band, but as hard as I try I just can’t seem to remember the name. Quite annoying.

A thing that really stands out on this record is the drum sound. Now the person who is behind the kit nowadays isn’t the person featured on the disc. This is mister Löytynoja who also happens to be the operator of Coffin Studios, where the demo was recorded. So naturally if your drummer is mixing the album, quite some attention goes out to the drums, slightly neglecting the rest of the instruments. The vocals really come out strong as well, but the guitar department seems to be a bit left behind (well, besides the nice solo’s). It’s no real big deal though, I just thought I’d point it out. The disc also features a multimedia section, that holds some nice material including the songs of their previous release Verityöt and two live videos. It's a nice addition to the five songs.

So, perhaps with a better balance between instruments the songs would have stuck in my mind a lot better. Nevertheless it isn’t hard to conclude that Ydin is on the right path with this second release. Give them a couple of years and we’ll find out what they’re truly capable of.
