A Storm of Light, Minsk, Simón - Sunday afternoon doom
While Minsk and A Storm of Light already played at the Roadburn Festival earlier this year, they embarked on a European tour later this year as well, in support of their brand new full-length’s. Yet another great Sunday afternoon show at the Baroeg! (I wonder how many times I’m going to say this…)

I was pretty impressed when I saw Simón opening for Torche and Pelican last year at Waterfront, so I was pretty curious how this band progressed in a year. With the release of their debut album Slices of You, it seemed the band was at the right place. Even though there weren’t many people in the venue yet, the band played a very decent show. Their music can be compared with Oceansize, Isis, Neurosis and Explosions at the Sky, merging styles such as post-rock, mathrock and sludge. Especially the mix between styles kept me interested throughout the 40 minute show. It’s not the most original band in these genres, but they sure know how to perform a good show. The only downside, just like the last time I’ve seen them, were the slightly out of tone clean vocals. The intense Isis-like screaming parts made up for this though. Other than that I think The Netherlands have some great export material right here! (Brent_)

Boy did I look forward to seeing this band! I missed out on Minsk at the Roadburn Festival this year so I was very curious to see them perform live. Their new album With Echoes In The Movement of Stone made some serious playtime here lately and luckily they played mostly songs of this album. I was surprised the tracks were actually merged into each other by using some drone/noise in between. This, together with the spacey visuals, made this show an awesome trip. Songs like ‘Three Moons’, ‘Means To An End’ and ‘Narcotics and Dissecting Knives’ were played, but sadly after 4 tracks the show was already over after half an hour or so. Shame this band played before A Storm of Light because I think it would have been better if they had switched. Quality show nevertheless, but I’d love to see a headling show from these guys some day! I had seen A Storm Of Light once before at the Pukkelpop festival a couple of years ago, but I wasn’t too impressed with their performance back then. According to several people they were quite good when they played the Roadburn fest, so I gave them another chance here. Unfortunately I again got the feeling I was just watching a Neurosis clone band (which is not surprising since the band is formed by the visual artist of Neurosis). I can’t say it was not enjoyable though, for their postcore suited my condition just fine this Sunday afternoon. It’s just that the (mostly) clean vocals are a bit off-tone now and then, although this did improve as the gig progressed. Still, I can’t say I was convinced this time. Better luck next time.
