On Fire - Maximum hardcore with On Fire

I can remember that when I was at High school there was a guy in my class who played in the band Antcow. His name was Sander Bolk. He invited me to visit his show at the UVB fest near a place called Volkerl. Now about 5 years later I'm going to tell you something about his band. Antcow changed his name into ON FIRE. I was suprised by their first album "Dare to let it go" and even more suprised by "Dreaming, Not Dying". This band knows how to combine different styles of Hardcore music and create an own sound.
It's time for you te meet On Fire!
On Fire is a hardcore-band based in the south of The Netherlands, known for their energetic and enthusiastic stage performances! They have already played over 200 shows all over the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the Czech Republic. These were shows with bands like Shutdown, Awkward Thought, Roger Miret & The Disasters, Murphy's Law, Stars ‘n Stipes/Slapshot, NJ Bloodline, Backfire!, Deviate, No Turning Back and Reaching Forward to name a few...
On Fire is capable of turning the place they perform at into a frenzy. They've got no attitude and ‘play your ass off' seems to be their motto.
On Fire's music can be described as powerful old school-hardcore to which they give their own rocking twist. With their two guitarists and their double vocals they truly create a sound of their own. A sound in which hardcore plays the key role, and punkrock- and heavy metal- influences are present to give it a more melodic touch.
Although On Fire has already played a lot of shows, the world still lies open in front of them. Not only in the Netherlands, but also outside the hardcorefans can be sure to see On Fire in the near future. With an average of playing 2 to 5 shows a month, they're very active and they're determined to keep playing and playing. Therefore new shows are always welcome. So bookers: get in touch!

Discography
ON Fire / SUPERHERO - Split 7Inch

As bands, ON FIRE and SUPERHERO have always believed that music can be a powerful force ' directly or indirectly ' for change. Whether it is people reading the lyrics and thinking more constructively about the world around them, or coming to shows and feeling the music as an outlet for emotion, there is no doubt that what we are doing is changing our small area, at our small point in time, positively, and by example.
The English dictionary defines UNITY as "the quality or state of being made one", which, in our opinion, is a state that is worth striving for. Whether it be in religion, culture, creed or even a music scene, a lack of unity is what creates most strife in the world today. Consider it.
Thus, we present this split project. Two bands together on one piece of vinyl that is as clear as our intentions. The songs span the musical spectrum; from old school hardcore, moshy breakdowns, heavy metal riffing, punk rock speed, ska interludes, and a full acoustic song. In a time when far too many musical projects produce a legacy of the expected, this is a small miracle.
"And miracles", as a wise man said, "are the way things ought to be"...
ON FIRE - Dreaming, Not Dying

6 Songs of agressive, melodic and energetic hardcore combined with punkrock and heavy metal influences.

"For six songs long they simply kick ass!" (Back To Back e-zine)

"This record has it all: passion, aggression, melody and solo's" (Bullet magazine)

"The mini-album Dreaming, Not Dying is one hell of a record" (Fret magazine)

"Dreaming, Not Dying is nothing less than amazing. Fast and furious old school hardcore is combined with Iron Maiden styled solo's and melodic parts!" (WMTD e-zine)

Why does ON FIRE play Hardcore music?
Why not? No seriously, it's just the music we like the most. We all grew up with bands such as Sick Of It All and the likes. Those bands had a great influence on all of us. Ofcourse we listen to other stuff as well, but basically hardcore still is (and always will be) our favourite style of music. Hardcore has it all: anger, energy, melody, passion'
Besides all that, it's really easy to play hardcore. Just learn three chords and go for it! That's what we did when we started, almost 10 years ago. And that's one of the things I like about hardcore/punk the most: everybody can start his or her band. You don't have to be Joe Satriani or something, just play from your heart and give it a 110%.
And in case you we're wondering: Ofcourse we can play more than three chords by now.

What's the meaning of Hardcore for you?
In the question above we've only talked about the musical aspect of hardcore, but in fact there's much more to it. I guess you can call it a state of mind, at least that's how I see it. Hardcore taught me to think for myself and to do things according to what I think is right. No matter what other people or the media say: reasons, not rules make us strong.
The hardcore-scene itself is pretty cool I guess. It's a place I really feel at home and where I can relate to most of the things that are going on. Going to shows, seeing bands play, making new friends, catch up with old ones, it's great!

How can you describe your own music?
Our music has a lot of influences ranging from straight up hardcore to melodic punkrock to Iron Maiden-styled metal. It's fast, it's raw, it's pissed!

Which bands influences ON FIRE?
There aren't that many direct influences. We don't try to copy a particular band or style. In general I guess bands like Sick Of It All, Stretch Arm Strong and Death By Stereo are of influence to us. The type of bands that do whatever the fuck they like to do and don't worry about trends or anything. They all have a distinct positive attitude too. We're not the biggest fans of the tough guy-attitude a lot of hardcore-bands have. Oh, and I think I'll get in trouble with the rest of the band if I don't mention the almighty Iron Maiden as an influence too, hehe.

Why should people listen to ON FIRE?
Because we play quality music and we play it from our hearts.

What was the best things ever happened in the history of ON FIRE?
Playing in a band is pretty hard. Some people have a romantic vision of playing in a band. They think that the minute you pick up a guitar or a microphone you're an instant rockstar. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. They don't know anything about playing shows in front of 10 people, sleeping in cold vans, taking shit from the crowd or whatever. It takes a lot of time and dedication (and money too) to really make a band work.
The best thing ever happened to this band is the fact that, despite all the hardships we've gone through over the years, we're still a band, we're still a team and we're still best friends. Our singer Sander got On Fire tattooed on his arm just last week. I guess that should say enough'
Of course playing in a band is also a lot of fun and we've experienced a lot of good things too. So if I have to answer this question with a concrete event, I would say the German/Czech-tour we did last year was the best thing that happened to On Fire. It was so much fun. The shows we played were really cool and we've met a lot of awesome new people on that tour.

What's your vision about ON FIRE in the nearby future?
We've just got a split 7" with our friends from Superhero out now. We hope we can play a lot of shows because of it. Everybody should check it out! It contains 4 songs, 2 of each band. On Fire had 2 new songs on that 7": Burn and Skulls & Stripes.
Other than that we're very busy with writing new material which we hope to record for a new album real soon. Hopefully we can do some more touring in the future too.
We'll just keep on going and we'll see what happens.

What can we expect from ON FIRE on stage?
You can expect a really energetic show. Playing live is the best thing there is! When on stage everyone in the band gives it more than 100% and we hope the crowd can relate to that. For us the interaction with the crowd is really important.
