Vinnie Paul wants late Avenged Sevenfold drummer to win this year's 'golden gods award'
According to the Artisan News Service, Vinnie Paul Abbott, current drummer for metal supergroup Hellyeah and former drummer for Pantera, took home the inaugural Golden Gods award for "Best Drummer" in 2009 and he couldn't be happier to pass the torch at the second annual Revolver Golden Gods Awards in 2010. Revolver magazine will host its Golden Gods Awards on April 8, returning to Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles in an event that has quickly become a fan favorite - a much-needed awards show honoring the metal and hard rock genres.
Fans have the opportunity of voting online for their favorite metal musicians in categories like "Best Vocalist", "Best Live Band", "Best Guitarist", "Album Of The Year" and "Best Underground Band", just to name a few.
The nominees for "Best Drummer" at the 2010 Goden Gods Awards include Chris Adler from Lamb Of God, Brann Dailor from Mastodon, Dave Grohl from Them Crooked Vultures, Gene Hoglan from Dethklok/Fear Factory, Dave Lombardo of Slayer and the late Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan of Avenged Sevenfold.
At the press conference announcing the Golden Gods 2010 nominees, Vinnie Paul talked about how special it was to win the first annual Golden Gods Award for "Best Drummer" and how honored he is to pass on the torch to 2010's winner.
"I was lucky enough to win the very first Golden Gods award for the 'Most Awesome Drummer'; it's what they called it," he said. "It was a very special day to win that. The competition was incredible, and it was just a great honor to win it. And I'm happy to be able to be the person that passes it on to the next Golden Gods greatest drummer this year."
He added, "All the guys on the list are amazing, so it's gonna be a special night; it's gonna be a lot of fun.
"It's about time we got our own awards [show] for this kind of music. Everybody else has an awards [show] for their thing, and the metal and rock and roll community definitely needs this."
Vinnie also talked about pulling for his sentimental favorite, the late Jimmy "The Rev' Sullivan for 2010's Golden Gods for "Best Drummer."
"My personal favorite is a very sentimental favorite," he said. "I'm pulling for Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan, who is no longer with us. He played in Avenged Sevenfold, and he was just an amazing person and an incredibly talented drummer that brought a whole lot of new energy and fire to playing drums.
"God bless you, Jimmy. We miss you. And I hope you win."
