So, what have we here, the fourth record of Swedish melodic death metallers The Duskfall. Their debut stems from 2002 and I was quite fond of that record at the time. Somehow their second and third record slipped pass me unnoticed so let's see whether I missed something!
The Duskfall’s sound can be very well compared with In Flames’ sound on Reroute to Remain. It has the same swing and melodic touches, combined with a not too polished production and a characteristic voice. The only real differences are that The Duskfall’s music is more riff orientated, less solos pass by and it’s not brighten up with fancy keyboards and stuff. Remarkably The Duskfall’s debut was released in the same year as In Flames’ Reroute to Remain. Were In Flames’ sound once again evolved after Reroute to Remain, The Duskfall keeps firmly sticking to the familiar sound. Nothing really noticeable changed on The Dying Wonders of the World compared to their debut. It’s just very decent melodic death metal with a raw ánd fat production and Kai Jaakkola’s distinctive voice still goes strong on this very well listenable record.
No, nothing really noticeable changed in The DuskfallÂ’s sound on this fourth record. Is that a shame? Many people always shout that a band shouldÂ’ve stuck to their old style when theyÂ’re experimenting. So, The Duskfall offers a good deal for all those who want to keep listening to the same style of melodic death metal year after year. For me, it canÂ’t really get a grip on me anymore.
