With an album at position #4 in my personal yearlist of ’08 and with 2 great live shows, at the Zwarte Cross festival and as support of Cradle Of Filth, the Portuguese guys from Moonspell did a great job with convincing me of their talent. With the 2-DVD release of Lusitanian Metal they tried to end the year in style. The package with which they try to achieve that goal contains of more than 60 live tracks, 6 video clips and interviews with the current band members.
Due to the fact they switched labels a couple of years ago, there isn’t any footage of songs from the records Memorial and Night Eternal. This isn’t really a problem though, ‘cause what we do get is a really complete picture of the band’s history until then. With their gig in Katowice, Poland in 2004 as the main event of Lusitanian Metal, we get footage from songs that cover their entire career. That they’ve been making music for a long time now can easily be concluded by looking at the quality of some of the older recordings. But with the footage of their concert at Katowice and the quality of the recordings of their gig at the 10th anniversary of the With Full Force festival for example, there isn’t anything wrong.
All in all this document is a great one for the fans and for the ones who always wanted to get to know the music of Moonspell a little bit better. It took Century Media four years before they were able to release this package, but they’ve definitely released an awesome product. Personally I would have loved to see a show with some songs from their Night Eternal record, but that’s SPV’s job.
