Of course there are no real surprises on the album; you don’t expect weird experiments on an AC/DC album either. Or it must be ‘Floyd’ a flirt with psychedelic rock and a great track by the way. A track like the melancholy ‘Unwrite That Song’ sounds like it belongs on a country radio station. It is ballad dealing about bad lyrics. It may raise a few eyebrows, but not a many as ‘That ain’t my America’. It really is a big fuck you to all who is against the U.S. and everybody who is trying to change it. I can’t really blame them for writing this. After all, it is their home and country.  

 

Lynyrd Skynyrd may be producing happy sounding tunes, their personal history is one of intense tragedy. Their airplane crash of 1977, ended the lives of three of its original members. Earlier this year, keyboard player Billy Powell passed away, leaving guitarist Gary Rossington as the last original member of the band. Powell is however present on the album.

 

Gods and Guns is simply a great album from the Skynyrd boys. I can’t really pinpoint a highlight as I consider all the tracks great in some way. You just hear the fun and dedication through the music that has been created. If I have to highlight a track it must be Southern Ways. A great sing-along track and you can catch the words to it almost instantaneously. In the bridge of the song, they incorporated the recognisable chord progression from ‘Alabama’. And as strange as it may sound, I can relate in some way to this song as I am myself from the south of Holland. I know the feeling. Could be a reason why I like southern Rock. And about the lyrics, take them with a pinch of salt. As far as I am concerned, one of the best releases of 2009.
