From First To Last - Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has A Bodycount

From First To Last, ever heard of this band before? Neither did I! Until I found out that this band would support 36 Crazyfists on their European tour this month. Metalrage got an e-mail from Epitaph with the question if we wanted to do an album review and maybe an interview as well. I was really excited to hear this band while there aren’t that much that really can be considered a good support act for 36CF.
Reading the FFTL bio though already made me curious. And let me tell you this, it’s a shame that we didn’t hear (much) about this band before, certainly when you’re looking at the release date of this album: July 12th 2004!

This album will certainly not be what you expected it to be. Starting with a kind of mysterious intro, the music really starts with a nice fade into. Heavy music, melodic music, acoustic music, grunting, screaming, clean vocals and more, it’s almost like From First To Last can put all this ingredients in only one second of music. With four of the five bandmembers using a mic, of course this gives a great effect to each and every song on this disc. These guys use so much variation, that it’s a real big pleasure for the ear to listen to this album. There’s just not one song that will bore you.

But it’s almost difficult to actually appreciate this great variation, because sometimes the vocals almost seem to be a little bit out of tone. But if you hear this as well, listen through it, listen it again and again and then judge again. People with a bit of musical feelings will hear this isn’t false but it’s art. Really, I didn’t have that high expectations of this band, but they impressed me so much that I actually can’t even write a normal review about this CD.

As the official bio describes this band: “Kill the lights” a growling throat commands just seconds into From First To Last’s monumental debut ‘Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has A Bodycount’. And it’s in this darkness that FFTL’s magnetic amalgam of influences like hardcore, rock ‘n’ roll, blood curdling metal and punk fuckin’ rock takes on a life all its own.

I couldn’t have said it any better and so I’m not even gonna try. Just check this band out, it’s great, it’s different, it’s a pleasure. From First To Last, I’m looking forward to see you guys play on April 12th in Amsterdam!
