Skullhog, Bloodbastard - Grind Night 4
Skullhog is one of my favourite bands in Holland. Formerly known as Bile, the band play a combination of sludge and goregrind that is unprecedented. Due to the band's ultra limited live performances (like 30 shows in ten years time…), I was utterly keen on seeing these cult grinders play. Support tonight came from Bloodbastard.

Bloodbastard play basically the same sort of grindcore as Skullhog. Slow sludgy riffs combined with brutal grindcore. It was immediately obvious that their guitar player was drunk as shit, as he fucked up a couple of parts in about every song and was wavering around like Jack fucking Sparrow. The band tried to make something good out of it as much as possible, but anything other than a hilarious performance with a high entertainment value was hard to be found. Funny show, but kind of retarded.

This was the third time I saw Skullhog perform, but the first time under this monicker. Still it means that I saw ten percent of all their shows, haha! The sound tonight was superb, ultra heavy and loud, yet quite defined (for a sludgy goregrind band that is). As they rocked out songs of both their albums and a number of songs from split records, I couldn’t help but feel that this is still my favourite Dutch band of all time. Those devastating crawling sludge riffs combined with bashing grindcore somehow really gets to me. Topping that are nasty pitch-shifted vocals of guitarist Ben and the screams of drummer Rob, who was really into it tonight, bashing the hell out of his drumkit with all his power and hate. Add a little redneck humour and you have one hell of an enjoyable evening. I would love for this band to play more often, but then again that would kind of ruin their cult status. Lucky are the depraved few that got to see them live once. Boar-men unite, hail to the Hog!
