Village Of Dead Roads - Dwelling In Doubt
I reviewed a split album of this band with Spiritu earlier this year, and I was already impressed by what they showed me then. I can only hope that this full length album will manage the same for me, but I have a sneaking suspicion it will…

When I wrote the review for that split back then, it came with a stoner/doom description for it, and it quite sounded like that. But I missed some very important aspects back then, that are emphasized even more with the release of this Dwelling In Doubt album. And that is the fact that there are more small elements of bands like Isis, Swarm Of The Lotus, Neurosis and Mastodon present in this music. So you could say that they’re working with that new epic atmospheric soundscape material that can burst into hell at any time, which is some very cool stuff I think.

Well, the most important thing for this album is that the music stands its ground like a concrete wall. This truly sounds like a massive beast when erupting, but it can be as gentile as an Opeth bridge when necessary. And like with their split album, all tracks were recorded live in one take without losing any power at all. In fact, I think it makes this material stand out even stronger. Even vocally (clean and scream) there’s nothing to say about the quality of the mixes. It’s all very raw and convincing.
So considering they’re trying to join in on a genre that has quite some competing bands in it already, they’ve done more than a good job. They still seem to have an overall stoner doom approach, but with all the elements of those bands mentioned above. Add some short electronical intermezzo’s, excellent musicianship and a record label that is called Do You Like Beards? Records, and you’ve got a very good release I’d say. Check this out!

PS. There is also a new split in the making that features a 10 plus minute doom track with the band OCEAN, keep an eye on that!
