Runemagick - Invocation Of Magick
Sweden’s Runemagick has released it’s ninth effort in doom metal on Norway’s Aftermath Music, a doom label that managed to surprise me earlier this year with Skumring. Will this Invocation of Magick do the same for me?

The disc is comprised of long, heavy doom tracks accompanied by a dark and dirty grunt. You can definitely trace back that there are some big black and death metal influences in this band, but it seems like the doom has the upper hand on this release.

But how’s the quality of it then?!? Well, I really really like the extreme slow parts. The slowest of the slowest riffs can really make me doze off into a galaxy of flying wood nymphs and ass goblins (or something of that order). Their soundscaping ability is very good indeed. But as soon as the tempo picks up a bit, I don’t really like it anymore. Could be due to the fact that I’m not a big fan of old-skool classics like St. Vitus and such, but this is certainly no Electric Wizard.

For the most part of this record I don’t have a lot to complain, but there are several occasions on which I get slightly disappointed by the quality of the riffs. For fans of combining old doom with the new-skool stuff with a black/death undertone, this is a worthy addition for your collection.
