Gallows - Orchestra Of Wolves
Gallows rose from the ashes of Winter In June and My Dad Joe. Which to be honest doesn’t ring a bell with me at all. But the Biography continues and also tells me that the Gallows take the riffage of the riffery of Mastodon, the off-killer tempo changes of JR Ewing, the rock ‘n roll swagger of The Bronx and the discordant noise of Swing Kids then wrap it up, sealed in a sweat and alcohol soaked Union Jack. I always wanted to know how you can hear a Union Jack soaked in sweat in alcohol. Well enough with the small talk and let’s get down to the case.

The album immediately explodes in your face with the rather hysterical song ‘Kill The Rhythm’. With this song the tone for the rest of the album Orchestra Of Wolves is set. Up tempo Screamo/ Post Hardcore songs with some softer punk parts and even a nice intermezzo every now and then. It’s probably because of that variation that Orchestra Of Wolves sounds very well balanced.

As for the biography I’m not able to hear the Mastodon riffs but I do hear quite some influences of J.R. Ewing and the Swing Kids. Of course Gallows is wise enough not to copy the sound of those bands completely but give it their own twist. But I have to say I’m not completely convinced, to me it all sounds a bit too slicky like they’re to eager to do it right.

Although Gallows didn’t convinced me completely I have to say that I do hear some great potential. Not that they’re the next big thing but with the right people and the right contacts they should come a long way. Orchestra Of Wolves is certainly not the greatest album I’ve ever heard but it gives Gallows the chance to gain more fans and to grow as a band. I’d say if you’re into J.R. Ewing or the Swing Kids you should give Gallows a try.
