3 - Wake Pig
Not too long ago I discovered a very surprising and unique band: 3. Yep, just 3. But when they started playing I soon learned I should just ignore this dull name and listen to what these guys have to offer. I can tell you this: they have a lot to offer! The cool thing about this band is that you most probably haven’t heard anything like this before and that the guys in this band do whatever they wanna do. Metal, rock, Latin, slow, fast, nothing is to weird for them and I always like bands who take these kind of ‘risks’.
It’s simply impossible to label this band with one particular genre. The music contains so many influences yet nothing specific really pops up. The album is truly a piece of art which everybody could like. Don’t expect anything extremely heavy and pounding. Especially the voice of vocalist Joey Eppard gives this music a unique, soft and melodic twist. But the other guys certainly know what they’re doing as well. Listen for example to the (instrumental) song ‘Bramfatura’. You’ll probably think you’re listening to a Spanish/Latin guitarband. Real nice song though! Other songs I really recommend are ‘Alien Angel’ and ‘Where’s Max’.
Every now and then some small Tool parts pop up in the music and although I don’t know any music of Coheed and Cambria, this music probably is a must for fans of that band. Why? Well, here’s what Claudio Sanchez (C&C) had to say about this band: “One of the few moderns bands I truly consider to be great, an inspiration to me and all the members of Co&Ca. This is important.” If this isn’t convincing yet, let me quote Travis Stever (C&C) then: “One of the best, live or on record. We’re lucky to have a band like 3 in 2005.”
As you might found out while reading this review, I totally dig this band. It’s something completely different from everything else and I think everyone should give it a try. Luckily they put the song ‘Alien Angel’ online at the Metal Blade Records website (http://www.metalblade.com) ‘cause that song is just great. Really gives me the shivers.
