Gorath - The Fourth Era
A cosmological black metal album with a concept based upon the ancient Mayan 2012 theories… wow that really sounds interesting. I won’t explain what it is, you can do that yourself with Wikipedia.

Gorath was founded in 1995 in Belgium. After 4 demo’s and one album it’s time for their second album The Fourth Era. Gorath plays cosmological black metal, to me that sounds like Bal Sagoth. But this is way different. Gorath plays a mix of traditional and progressive black metal.

I really love the compositions on this album. If you would combine Keep of Kalessin, Satyricon, Enslaved, Cadaver Inc, Thorns and Emperor, it would result in The Fourth Era. It seems like Gorath can only write strong riffs. Just like the vocals, which have a range from grunts and screams to clean vocals and Viking metal-like choirs. The songs have everything I can wish for of a modern black metal album; great blast drums, razor-sharp riffs, slower pumping parts, modern melodic licks, slow acoustic interludes and great vocals.
The way Gorath brings you the stories about the Mayas is great! I can really recommend you to read the lyrics on their website, you’ll actually learn something.

The production is awesome, it’s so clear and perfectly mixed, one of the better modern black metal productions in my opinion. The Fourth Era really is a must have for the black metal fan.
