Deviant - What We Bring Forth
From the other side of the world Singapore brings us Deviant. After numerous line-up changes three geezers ended up recording an EP titled What We Bring Forth. Heavy aggressive metal is what they have to offer.
This EP sounds, looks and smells like a demo to me. With five songs they show us who they are. Well, for me that is just a bunch of youngsters trying to make the best of it. Nothing more really.
Though it’s recorded in the TNT studios in Singapore the sound isn’t all that. The drums sound too sticky and slappy because of the overloaded attack. Because of that it doesn’t sound really tight. The vocals are a bit poor. He should leave the screaming parts left for someone else and for the clean parts it would be nice if it had the same power as in his screams.
With only three men they do create a packed sound. I can hear the influences from Machine Head, as said in their bio, but I don’t hear any Alice in Chains or Killswitch Engage. They do try to combine heavy and melodic stuff but don’t know exactly how to put it. Both melodic and heavy parts don’t make me enthusiastic when I normally really like this combination.
I think they could define their sound. Some better producing would make a difference already. Whenever Deviant has a new record out I would like to review it as well. See how the progress has gone. Besides that I think it’s great to hear something all the way from Singapore again.
