Gilby Clarke - Gilby Clarke (compilation)
I wonder if there are many people who remember Gilby Clarke. He was once part of the Guns ‘n’ Roses circus taking over Izzy Stradlin’s six stringer duties around 1991. At that time the gunners had a reputation of being the most dangerous and notorious band in the world. Maybe that was part of the reason why his stay in the band was short-lived, besides of musical differences. Clarke sure didn’t make a mistake leaving them. Anybody who was a witness of that horrible gig that Axl Rose and Co gave at Graspop last year can only agree with his departure.

Clarke has released 4 studio albums and one live record since he left. He was also involved in numerous other projects and bands such as Slash’s Snakepit and Colonel Parker. So his record company Spitfire thought it would be good timing to release this compilation set. It compromises his solo material next to a re-recording of the track ‘Black’ with American Rock Star Supernova finalist Dilana.

As his solo records are not easy to obtain I can understand this release. Gilby Clarke is indeed a great guitar player. Great musicianship is heard on this ‘best of’. Gilby is in fact assisted by many (ex-)Guns ‘n Roses members such as Slash and Dizzy Reed. But to be honest, this is just standard Rock ‘n’ Roll. If that’s your thing you sure are going to love this. Besides a few tracks like the before mentioned ‘Black’ and ‘Judgement Day’ it is not really must hear material. And I don’t believe better tracks are to be found on his separate solo albums.
