Beneath The Frozen Soil/Negative Reaction - Split
The second disc we received of Israel’s Totalrust Music is a split album. It features the Swedish doom metal band Beneath The Frozen Soil and the New York based sludgecore threesome Negative Reaction (playing on this release courtesy of This Dark Reign). Let’s see how that combination works out.

Beneath The Frozen Soil gently starts their part of the disc with an instrumental intro without distortion. Then a funeral doom like track begins, and they maintain that sound until the end. At first I wasn’t that charmed about BTFS, but I as I listened to the album more and more, it appeared to have something I really liked; namely the instrumental passages without distortion, just like the intro. The use of a piano and a cello really lift the level of their music to a higher level, adding the necessary variation doom metal usually goes without. In average I still am not that impressed with the heavy parts of the music, but the songwriting and the production are more than fine and any fan of funeral doom should definitely check this band out.

Negative Reaction operates on a slightly different level than Beneath The Frozen Soil, no funeral doom here, just plain nasty sludgecore. They’ve done quite some releases since 1993 already, including one with Ramesses (the band featuring the other two founding Electric Wizard members) in 2006. But again I must say that I’m not that impressed with the sound these guys record. I play in a sludgecore band myself and our main source of inspiration for this music is Iron Monkey. These guys don’t really resemble that band in any way though. The riffs are alright to me, but it’s the vocals that irritate me. This guy has this high soaring screaming voice that expresses panic, but I just don’t like the sound of it. Maybe some underground punk/hardcore fanatics will dig it, but not me. The music itself does give away some kind of a hardcore background as well. So if you’re looking for a new sludgecore band to check out, try this one on for size. Two of the three have very cool beards by the way.

In average I must say that the music is quite alright with both bands, too bad it’s not really my cup of tea, or in this case, my bottle of beer. Hmm, bad comparison, I drink beer that I don’t like as well…
