Well what have we here; Goon Moon’s follow-up to the previously released debut album I Got A Brand New Egg Layin’ Machine which I unfortunately missed. Now the band releases their second outing through one of my favourite labels of all-time Ipecac Recordings. Licker’s Last Leg is the name, but what the hell is the game…?

First a little introduction. Goon Moon is formed by Chris Goss, record producer and singer for Masters Of Reality and Jeordie White. Probably better that I introduce him as Twiggy Ramirez who used to be in Marilyn Manson and now active as bassist for A Perfect Circle and Nine Inch Nails. Two impressive musicians with impressive careers I might say. Some time ago they decided to jam together and this has already resulted in a second album. The duo is aided by other credited musicians like Josh Homme, Josh Freese, Dave Catching, Whitey Kirst and Peter Perdichizzi. Look them up if you don’t know who they are.

 

Enough of the name-dropping, because Goon Moon is one hell of a kick ass band. But what the hell do I call this music. As the bio states it is obvious that there are influences to be found from both the stoner side and the industrial side, but there is so much more to Licker’s Last Leg. The music goes from the sixties to the music of this millennium, combining it in a sort of Deerhoof way, which means really experimental yet catchy. One minute stoner, the other retro/hippie music, one minute a bit of a dark goth atmosphere, one minute electro, too much to name it all. It all joins together in an extremely relaxing and highly enjoyable adventure through time, space and music. There even is an amazing cover of the Bee Gees track ‘Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You’! This is one of the better Summer-feeling albums I've heard for this year fo sure!

 

It’s hard to draw a real conclusion, I guess keywords are innovative, relaxing, entertaining, refreshing and just plain fucking awesome. It’s just too bad that both bandmembers have so much other duties to handle, which means that a real tour is probably hard to get on the road. But I’ll be patient, first I must get my hands on their debut album! Fans of QOTSA to NIN and all in between definitely want to check this out, you’ll be sorry if you don’t! Howl to the Goon Moon!!!
