The Birthday Massacre - Walking With Strangers
The Birthday Massacre is a band from Canadian origin. The band is formed in 1999 by guitarist Rainbow and singer Chibi. Walking with Strangers is their third release after two cds which were mainly released in Canada and the US of A.

The Birthday Massacres music is a mixture between eighties synthpop, alternative rock and some gothic rock. Their music reminds me a lot of the band Kill Hannah. Warning: this is not a cd if youre looking for your daily fix of metal! Not a trace of our beloved genre can be found on this cd. Does that mean that this cd is junk and not worth mentioning on Metalrage?

My answer would be: no way! Im a sucker for recognizable melodies and easy to sing-a-long tunes and those are two points that are around a lot on this album. I also like the vocal style of Chibi. She has a sweet sounding voice, which contrasts beautifully with the sometimes eerie keyboards.

Its too bad that the album starts with some of their best songs. The climax of the album is therefore reached very quickly and the quality of the songs drops off a bit after song seven/eight. I think that this is something that they really have to look at with the release of their next album.

I find Walking With Strangers a more than entertaining cd. I dont give albums 80 points or higher a lot (90-100 points are only reserved for truly classical albums in my opinion), but this album deserves the 80 points. If youre into alternative bands and also have a crush for eighties synthpop bands with a dark edge, you cannot leave this cd on the shelves in your local record store!
