Lazarus Blackstar - Funeral Voyeur

What we have here is a record that almost didnt see the light of day. During the recording process of Blackstar" title="Search for Lazarus Blackstar">Lazarus Blackstar's second album Funeral Voyeur, vocalist Paul Catten underwent surgery where he suffered an allergic reaction from an anaesthetic, causing him to slip into a coma. Luckily he recovered and made it to sing the rest of the album which lies before me now. Quite a story, lets check out the music.

Lazarus Blackstar is a slow and heavy metal band, most likely fitting to terms like sludgecore and doom metal, stuff I really like. Overall the band possesses a very nice and heavy groove which they maintain from start to finish of Funeral Voyeur. So nothing bad for the music.

But as we come to the vocals, I do have some issues. Its awesome for the guy that he survived a coma, but the panicking screamy vocals really get on my nerves, like halfway through the album already. Theyre pretty high and quite monotonous, while the music offers enough room for some heavier and more brutal sounds. There are some nice parts from him here and there, but in the end this guy just doesnt cut it for me.

A bit of a shame, this vocal issue, because I really like the music. Fans of heavy sludge-doom should check this out though; its definitely worth the effort of listening to it at least once.
