Mons Lunae - Seven Winds

Mons Lunae resides from the deep mystical places of Portugal and was formed in the year 1998. This brings them upon their tenth anniversary this year. Of course a lot has happened in all those years, several line up changes and of course the release of three demos. The latest demo called Seven Winds has just been released by the band and it has been send worldwide to gain attention of the record labels.

Seven Winds
consist of eight songs in the so-called gothic metal genre with a bit of folk influences. The biography speaks of the evaluation of their music from doom-, death metal to gothic-, folk metal. In my opinion there are still several death influences noticeable on the demo which gives the songs most of the time a great kick in the ass. Especially the male vocals on several tracks give those songs just that little bit more.

As for the addition of the flute I can be very short. It’s not my kind of style but it does fit the sound of the band perfectly. That flute gives the songs from time to time more atmosphere and does great things to the female vocals. It gives me the idea there’s a constant backing vocal present which gives the female vocals much more power without losing anything of the fragility.

Overall this demo is pretty nice. Of course the sound quality could have been better but that is with 99 percent of the demos. The music is well written and the musicians truly master their instruments, but of course that isn’t very strange if you consider the band is almost ten years old. If you didn’t master your instrument by now you’d never will.

All together they are a band that have delivered a great demo, which in my humble opinion is a nice start to grow bigger. Oh and one advice, get rid of the fire breathing horses on the cover.
