In Mourning - Shrouded Divine
Sweden's In Mourning was born in the epic year of 2000, and has released around 5 demos before recording their first full length called Shrouded Divine. 5 years of writing and playing proggy death metal has resulted into 8 very respectable tracks!

Their bio recommends this to fans of Opeth, In Flames and Arch Enemy, so that does sound promising.. In Mourning's take on metal is very reminiscent of what Mikael Akerfeldt has been doing; Vocalist Tobias' grunts and screams are in the same league, and the band also has a knack of doing some (very well done) clean vocals during the more acoustic passages. The band doesn't shy away from complex breaks and some odd time signatures, and basically all the parts sound well thought out and polished. Not every riff or drumbreak is 'genius', but these guys do know how to dose these things.

Personal favorite is 'The Black Lodge'  which opens with an instant-hummable guitarline, mixed with some modern In Flames-esque guitarwork and ditto vocals. The long middle-section has some of the most tastefull, melodic guitarsolos I've heard in a while. I actually rewinded to hear it again. These dudes know how to play! And having three guitarists results into a pretty badass guitar-wall-of-sound. In my taste it could have been a little more "analog" sound, the recording session in Black Lounge Studios resulted in the a little bit typical "Modern Swedish Metal" sound.

So, do you like Scandinavian Metal? Do you like the vocals and "prog-factor" of Opeth? Check this out!
