Another Kind Of Death - Sleepless Every Night
Another Kind Of Death claim to be the pioneers of mathcore in their home-country Spain, which is something I do not doubt, or intend to investigate for that matter. They’ve already released a four-way split album with some other cool Spanish bands (see the review on our site as well) and an album in 2004, and now they present us their second record entitled Sleepless Every Night, mastered by the legend Allan Douches.
The sound of Another Kind Of Death is somewhere in the regions of mathcore, postcore and metalcore, all very intense and quite overwhelming. The production of it all is very bombastic, which makes the whole even more intense. Sleepless Every Night is obviously not a record you get in one listen. The sound this record resembles the most is that of Converge, Zao and Norma Jean, with an emphasis on the metalcore aspect. But still, it is hard to put this band in a box, because it is one that thinks outside of it.
I have mixed feelings with this record. I definitely like the production (how could I not, Allan Douches has worked with Mastodon and The Dillinger Escape Plan), but the songs don’t completely grab me yet. Don’t get me wrong, you must be an idiot not to hear that these guys can play and that there is a lot of potential, but the level of songwriting needs to be lifted up even more.
