Killwhitneydead - Nothing Less Nothing More

Killwhitneydead (KWD) has one original member left since its birth a couple of years ago. But since I never heard any of their previous albums, I frankly don’t give a shit. I was just looking at their new, and fourth album as a nice way to find out whether this is my style or not. I can tell you, it certainly fits my preferences!

You don’t have to be very smart to find out that this album is quite different from most other albums you’ve heard. I mean, you have probably heard spoken words in songs numerous times before, but on this release, every song contains some spoken words. Not just simple, bullshit talk though, these words actually make sense. And besides that, they’re most of the times pretty damn funny as well. An example: “Nowadays all I do is lose friends, drink and nail anything with a heartbeat.” Bang! And the music kicks in with some heavy ass guitar work and screams that may remind you of bands such as Bring Me The Horizon or Beneath The Sky.

But really, although I absolutely dig this music, I sometimes tend to focus more on the spoken word-parts than on the music itself. Which, on the one hand is a good thing because they’re obviously not dull or anything but on the second hand, it must be the music this band wants to promote, not so much the parts in between. Therefore I suggest to decline the number of spoken word-parts on possible next releases. But I gotta say it again; I do dig it this way! For once that is.

Music wise you can expect a mixture of (extreme) metalcore and deathcore parts. Just your standard breakdowns here and there and some nice solos mixed through all that. It’s nothin’ really special but it isn’t bad either. To be honest, it’s not bad at all! It’s just that most of it has been done before.

Still, Nothing Less Nothing More is quite a nice album. It’s original in some ways, for example: there’s some pleasant surprises on it – like a power metal part in ‘Stop Crying Just Start Dying’ and a cover of ‘Tainted Love’, which sounds kinda funny. Yeah, you may also think it’s gay to cover that song, but according to Family Guy’s Stewie it’s not! So there you go, it’s not gay! Stewie’s always right remember?!
