Witchcraft - The Alchemist
Before me lies the third album of Swedish retro-rockers Witchcraft, entitled The Alchemist. The band was supposed to tour with Corrosion Of Conformity and Monster Magnet, but both tours were cancelled at the last moment. Talk about bad luck. The bright side is that they did tour with Clutch though. Let’s see what this foursome packs.
Witchcraft plays vintage bluesrock straight from the seventies, music your dad will probably like if he wasn’t a disco geek. A name like Wolfmother comes to mind, but where a lot of people were taken by surprise by the so-called greatness of that band I failed to see what was interesting. This music is old, done a millions times, and simply quite boring after a short while. The same is sort of the case with Witchcraft, at least for me. The songs are definitely well composed, executed and produced, but I don’t get the feeling it really adds something to the music in this genre that’s already out there for years.
Well that’s it basically. If you feel like rocking out like they did thirty years ago you should definitely check this one out, it sure is high quality old school hippie rock. I personally just don’t see any reason to play this disc, at all. Too bad.
