Vverevvolf Grehv - Zombie Aesthetics
In my time as an intern at Relapse Records, I was confronted with Vverevvolf Grehv numerous times. This was something so experimental, no one would wanna buy it. Which is an argument for me to be a fan, hehe. I thought I really liked it, until the promo copy came in with the mail and I listened to the entire album on a decent stereo, would I still like it now?
I have mixed feelings now. But first let me introduce what Vverevvolf Grehv is, besides a ridiculous weird band name. It’s a side project from Dapose, who is a guitarist in the dance-punk/new wave band The Faint. The bio states that it’s a 21st century synthesis of IDM, sinister vocals and visceral metal guitar. That, and it’s unlike anything you have ever heard. They’re right about these things. But is it nice to listen to? Well….
It has its fun sides, but also its downsides. Overall it is definitely clear we’re listening to something new in the vein of electronics and metal, but in my opinion it could’ve been way more chaotic and fucked up, especially with the breakcore and metal scenes moving towards each other more and more lately. That, and I don’t really get the feeling I’m listening to actual songs, just a cacophony of noises, samples and guitars. For the vocals I have to admit the name Striborg comes to mind, not a good thing at all.
Well Vverevvolf Grehv (I was told you have to pronounce it like you’re a Transylvanian vampire) is a nice attempt to spread discomfort and probably a lot of irritation and misunderstanding, but if I put it next to a Otto von Schirach, Genghis Tron or Fantômas record, it just kind of fades away in the shadows of these names. Too bad, perhaps if he tries it again it will work out better.
