Thorium - Feral Creation
Thorium is a death metal five-piece from Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital city. Its members are, or were, involved in quite renowned acts such as Withering Surface, Iniquity, Taetre and Infernal Torment. The band was founded in 1997, released two albums (2000, 2002) and went on hiatus for a couple years. At the end of 2005 the band was reactivated again, which resulted in their recently released third full-length record Feral Creation.

Thorium’s experience offers us more than just a solid record. Feral Creation is in its entirety from a high level, full of pure and aggressive old school death metal, yet with a modern production. With that, I’m not necessarily saying ‘overproduced’ because it still has its raw edge, but it’s certainly a lot more accessible. Not surprising if I tell you who did the mixing; put Jacob Hansen behind the knobs and you’re guaranteed of a quality record.

I honestly have no idea whose death metal admirers won’t be satisfied with Feral Creation. It’s clear that Thorium represents the Scandinavian variant including the typical deathrash parts, and it also sounds hefty in such a way, but on the other hand it doesn’t become dilatory or sluggish. Songs like ‘Cast From Hell’ and ‘Sigil Of Baphomet’ feature intense outbursts of pure brutality that could also be written by bands from overseas. The whole album is full of catchy guitar riffs, flawless drum work and courageous vocals.

I therefore haven’t got anything to reprimand about. Thorium succeeded in creating an excellent record that can easily be in competition with the new Grave, for example. Also be sure to check out the artwork by Dan Seagrave, who finished the album with some great looks.
