Hailing from Antwerp, Belgium's Krossbreed now has released their third MCD, called Carved In Stone. The band consist of 4 different minds and therefore 4 different ideas about metal. Because this band didn’t put themselves in a genre Krossbreed doesn’t have real boundaries. The members are now five year in the band and they already have received some very positive feedback about their previous releases. I didn’t know this band before a couple of weeks ago when I received this MCD, so I’m curious whether I’m dealing with a pearl here or not…
While I was listening to this disc for the first time I wasn’t completely blown away. The band sounded okay, but nothing more… After some more spins I had to modify my opinion about them. The songs did need some time, but after a couple of spins I can say I really like the music of this Belgium quartet. Their music is amongst others inspired by bands like Metallica and Sepultura mixed with a little melody and some nice raw vocals. The clean vocals of singer Michel are less than his screams, but luckily it isn’t false or anything.
The songs are mostly fast, but they aren’t afraid of slowing down once in a while. They really try to create an own sound here and that works out fine. When mixing many different styles into one disc it’s hard to convince people aren’t listening to a compilation CD, but with Carved In Stone you’ll never have this feeling and this a big plus point and definitely a reason to check them out when you have the opportunity.
