Devolution - Penumbra
A few weeks ago I was at my friend's birthday and he got this EP from his (English) grandpa. That's actually how I discovered DeVoLuTioN. It sounded pretty damn good to me. Two days later I contacted the band with the question if they could send me a copy of this EP so I could make a review of it. They sent me a copy and here it is; a review of their 'Penumbra' EP.

Devolution is a young English metal band from the Northeast of Essex. They have taken their influences from well-known bands such as In Flames, Mudvayne, KoRn, Metallica and Dream Theater. Starting as a 'cover band' they supported some other local bands in 2003. In late 2003 the management of Devolution contacted producer Mark Daghorn (producer of bands such as Marillion and One Minute Silence). After hearing this band playing Daghorn decided to record Devolution's debut EP.

With a very nice combination of melodic and thrashing parts, this EP gives pretty much satisfaction while listening it. The music varies from very slow and melodic parts to thrashing parts with a much higher tempo. The instruments are very well-played, especially when I think of the fact that these guys are only at the age of 15/16 years old. The music just fits together as it's supposed to be with good music. Then the vocals; I just can't imagine that this guy is only 15 years old, what a voice! I wouldn't even be surprised if this young singer was in a great band like Mudvayne or something. Sometimes the vocals don't really fit, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time before Aaron Sly can handle this.

I think it's pretty clear that I'm really surprised by this band. I have to admit that I didn't expect this at all but the more I listen to this EP the more I like it. Well, what more can I say about it? Just support Devolution and buy this Penumbra EP from their official website.
