Lauren Harris - Calm Before the Storm
Oh my God. Lauren Harris has actually released an album. If it weren’t for her old man, the big boss of Iron Maiden, she wouldn’t even get to record a demo. Those who have experienced her live know that she’s very beautiful, but sounds like the girl two blocks away.
And now this girl is trying to move in next door and she already wants to borrow some sugar.
Calm before the Storm starts of with a cover from Gun and followed by two pretty old fashioned hardrock tracks. It is like I’m listening to old stuff by Michael Schenker. It is strange for someone who is in her early twenties to perform such old fashioned music. Perhaps something to do with the musical environment she grew up in? Halfway through the album the track 'Let Us Be' finally gives the album a bit of a spark. And actually sounds slightly modern. And I do mean just slightly.
Lauren’s voice isn’t exactly blessed with a wide vocal range. So when it comes to the mandatory ballad in the form of ‘Hurry Up’ she clearly struggles with the melody line. Being widely exposed, she can no longer hide behind a thick layer of guitars, bass and drums.
And on the special edition there is an UFO cover: ‘Natural Thing’. A track co-written by Michael Schenker, you can tell on who’s door she has been knocking to borrow some sugar.
Her biography on the internet says that Lauren Harris was spotted by legendary British producer-writer-artist Russ Ballard. He apparently had no idea she was the daughter of Iron Maiden leader/founder member, Steve Harris. I have my sincere doubts about that story. For now I like to give her the benefit of the doubt. Next time, she better comes up with way better material. Material that actually can produce a storm.
