Formed in 2004, Madrid, Spain’s Hybrid have released a demo and one MCD. 2008 sees the release of their first full length with on board a new vocalist. The 8th Plague should bring us metal in the vein of Cephalic Carnage, Textures, Meshuggah and Ion Dissonance. Sounds good to me!
Musically they indeed approach Cephalic Carnage a lot, just like The Red Chord. The sound of the band is quite brutal and very diverse. They’ve embraced the concept of experimenting with extreme brutal music and utilize an array of genres for this. A quick summary leads to quite an impressive list; death metal, grindcore, black metal, doom metal, crust, but the real eyebrow raisers are latin, bossa nova and free jazz. This gives the music a bit of a humoristic touch as well as the feeling of complexity. Quite a nice mixture.
The band sounds quite skilled, yet it doesn’t impress me as much as the average Cephalic Carnage release. This problem is mostly caused by the vocal department. The regular scream doesn’t convince me most of the times, yet there is a very deep brutal voice to be found in a couple of tracks that does appeal to me a lot. I’d prefer to hear that voice more. Furthermore the songs compositions aren’t of outstanding quality yet, but I do get reminded of early Cephalic Carnage more than once, which is a sign that they’re on the right path for me. Keep it up guys!
