Doom:VS - Dead Words Speak
The multitalented musician and producer Johan Erickson is Doom:VS. This Swedish musician has multiple projects going on and Doom:VS is one of them. Most distinguished and well known is probably his gothic/doom act Draconian, which he established in 1994. In 2004 he started his doom project Doom:VS, to create something utterly dark and personal in the unique field called doom metal. This is his second full length album called Dead Words Speak.

Doom:VS is a project, a vision of one man’s thoughts and ideas on doom metal. That’s always an interesting starting-point to see what one person will come up with! Johan Erickson did everything himself, from the recording till the artwork and playing all the instruments. The result is a crushing piece of doom metal, filled with emotions and despair, which really gets under your skin.

Dead Words Speak is a personal settlement with his emotional past and that’s something you can feel in the music. The utter despair and melancholy drips off in thick candle-wax. His grunt is dark and deep, but still brings across the emotion and despair. He sings with a clean, haunted and tormented voice as well, to give his sorrow even more meaning. Musically this album reminds me a lot of bands like Mourning Beloveth and the later My Dying Bride.

One song that stands out is the 12 minute long majestic epos ‘Threnode’, which has literally everything. From crushing, heavy doom-riffs to haunting keyboards to despaired vocals and a great built up in the song. Super! If you like your doom bleak, emotional and melancholic, than you should check out this album.
