Myrkvar - Als een Woeste Horde
In 2003 Myrkvar started as a black metal band. After some line-up changes however, they continued as a folk metal band. Now they have released their first album Als een Woeste Horde.
Honestly, I call this a folk metal band, because Myrkvar describes itself like that on its website. If they didn’t name it like that, I would have no idea where to make the distinction, because it’s hard to categorize them since they seem to be all over the place without deciding whether to go for black metal or folk metal.
You may assume that it’s nice when a band combines two genres, but in my opinion, on Als een Woeste Horde it’s just too much. It’s as if you’re listening to two completely different bands and that doesn’t exactly contribute to the cohesion on the album. Myrkvar would be better off sticking to one genre and using influences of the other, trying to define what the band really stands for.
Nevertheless, as a first full length Myrkvar definitely has to be proud of Als een Woeste Horde. The production is of a bad quality, but that doesn’t make the music less lively. They definitely got potential and I’m pretty sure many men and women will enjoy this album with their horns filled with mede (the honey wine).
