Dictator - Dysangelist
Dictator is a one-man project hailing from Cyprus, a country that doesn’t deliver much metal to my knowing. The man behind this project calls himself the same as his project, and he describes his music as suicidal black funereal doom metal. Yes funereal. As in real funeral. Darker than this is virtually impossible.
Dictator has released one demo record and one EP. Dysangelist is his first full-length outing, and when I say full-length I mean it. Seventy-five minutes of the darkest black doom metal one can image, divided into just four monolithic tracks. The most important aspect of music like this is the atmosphere, and on this area I have to say that Dictator claims the maximum score for I have heard few records with such a convincing dark ambiance. He has found the perfect balance between a smooth, almost elegant sound and the mandatory screeching, grim guitars and vocals. The smoothness is caused by good guitar melodies and enchanting keyboards and samples which also include Gregorian monk choirs and such, something I love very much.
The bio states that Dysangelist treats the topics of the religious worship of death and the inevitable decline of faith leading unto salvation. It’s not like you can hear this in the vocals, but the overall sound gives a feeling that it should revolve around something like this. It’s not happy, that’s for sure.
So if you dig the stuff of acts like Xasthur, MOSS, the recently reviewed material of Elysian Blaze and the likes of them, you should definitely check out Dictator. Dysangelist holds high quality black doom metal that should also appeal to the fans of the more black metal-oriented material of drone legends Sunn 0))). A collaboration between these acts would be a great fit, yet firstly let us find out how far this project gets on its own.
