CKY - Carver City
If you ever saw Viva La Bam or Jackass (either the series or the movies) or played games like Burnout: Revenge or Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 you’re probably already familiar with the music of Camp Kill Yourself (CKY). CKY furthermore shares its name with a series of skate and prank videos created by Bam Margera (brother of drummer Jess) in which also CKY’s music has been featured. The band was formed by friends Deron Miller and Jess Margera back in 1994 as Foreign Objects and now they present their fourth record as CKY, called Carver City.

After their previous release, An Answer Can Be Found (2005), it remained deadly quiet around these four guys. The only news we got was that they were signed by Roadrunner Records late 2006, but that was all. With the release of Carver City we also receive the news the band had almost decided to quit. A sabbatical year did what it should do though: helping the members see why they had to continue the band. Judging by this new full-length they made the best decision.

You don’t have to expect songs like ’96 Quite Bitter Beings’ on this album though. Since the beginning they have become more and more melodic and with Carver City they just follow this trend. The music therefore sounds more like the tracks on An Answer Can Be Found, but with even more harmony vocals and the use of keyboards. Maybe the CKY Alliance (their fans) would have wanted to hear something little less melodic, but all in all this is just a more than decent release if you like alternative rock.
