Concrete Block - Life Is Brutal
Concrete Block released their album, Life Is Brutal, in December 2008. This means I’m not able to put it on any yearlist. On the other hand, the question is whether or not this album would make it to any year list at all. According to their biography the band is suitable for fans of Hatebreed, Merauder, Terror and Cro-Mags, I might get lucky after all.

Concrete Block started in 2007 in Torino where they learned the language of the street and matured their attitude in one of the darkest cities of Italy. It almost looked like New York City so that is also where they got their sound from. Typical New York Hardcore in the vein of Madball. The only problem is that during the first couple of songs I’m not able to keep my attention with the album.

Most of the time I have the feeling I’ve heard it ten times better before. One of the main reasons is probably the vocals of Saverio. His vocals are from the deep roaring kind of type like Paul Bearer from Sheer Terror. The only problem is that unlike Paul, Saverio is very monotonous. Add to this the lack of variety and originality of the riffs and you’ll have Concrete Block.

I’m truly convinced these guys are giving all they’ve got but the music just isn’t exciting enough to hold my attention for a long time. After playing the disc for several times there’s still no song that stands out or even gets remembered by me. According to their bio this album is for many people the best Italian hardcore album of the year. I’m sure not one of those people.
