Sotajumala - Teloitus
It’s a known fact that a large part of Finland’s citizens are fan of hard rock. But do they also like extreme metal? If it’s up to Sotajumala it’s a yes, after they called their debut record Death Metal Finland. That’s like a review in the album title. The meaning of its successor is for me a little less clear, since my Finnish is not superb anymore. Glad I can understand the music though.

Understanding this music isn’t hard, since Teloitus’ sound is solid as a house. An excellent production dismantles a band that can easily be seen as one of the main death metal bands from its country. Its sound might not be original, but this record grooves as a motherfucker. It holds some nice guitar melodies, but it simply sounds too brutal to be labelled melodic death metal.

The influences on this record are somewhere in between old and new school. The old school influence comes from the excellent groove that is present in practically every song. The new school aspect is based on the ongoing bass drums (with or without blastbeats), and the fact that there are almost no thrash beats included. The production is as said bright and brutal, which makes it easy to listen too.

A couple of headlights are the opening track, in which the drummer holds a blastbeat tight for a long time - good endurance on that one. ‘Riistetty Viattomuus’s intro sounds a lot like Gojira, which stands equal to quality. The final (title)track is a bit different from the rest. The second half of this song (which lasts for almost 8 minutes) is slower than the other tracks and features a very exciting building towards the last climax.

To come to a conclusion; Teloitus is a very strong album that is recommended to all death metal fans. Excellent song writing skills and a thick production grabbed my attention, and I think a lot more people would be delighted to hear it. Hail Death Metal Finland.
