U.D.O. - Dominator
You can't teach an old dog new tricks. Don’t expect Udo Dirkschneider and Co. to suddenly do something completely different than before. And why would they? They’d immediately lose their audience exploring new grounds. Hey, with Accept he made heavy metal great, playing an important role in the development of speed metal. As far as I am concerned he is virtually in the same league as Ozzy Osbourne. He is definitely one of the godfathers of metal. He took his first steps into the metal world as far back as 1971.

Opening song ´The Bogeyman´ starts of with a deceiving keyboard intro. It doesn’t take long before the keyboard intro burst into a hard pounding metal track. You will immediately recognize the vast amount of Accept in the music’s D.N.A. The throbbing, fist pumping ‘Black and White’ revels in its true Priest-like glory. ‘Heavy Metal Heaven’ opens with an excellent percussive section, and is first class festival material. And that is what is so striking about U.D.O. Classic sounding metal on one hand and yet still contemporary on the other. You can place this next to modern day metal and it still sounds fresh.

The unique vocal style of Dirkschneider makes Dominator a strong album anyway, but the music is not to be overlooked. It follows 2007’s Mastercutor perfectly and is catchy as always. ‘Devil's Rendezvous’ is quite surprising for an U.D.O. album. It is quite danceable and if a pop arrangement would be made, I’m sure it would be an enormous hit. However I don’t see them even remotely trying that. After a career spanning 4 decades they won’t throw their integrity overboard. Excellent record, enough said.
