Black Friday '29 - Black Friday 2009
The European hardcore band Black Friday ’29 is back with a new mini album. After releasing several records the past seven years, which were received very well, they’ve now teamed up with Let It Burn Records for a “clear and pissed-off statement full of aggression, straightforwardness and social criticism”, called Black Friday 2009.
From the very first moment I put this disc in my CD-player I was pleasantly surprised. I must confess I wasn’t familiar with the band’s earlier work, but what I heard definitely appealed to me. Their New York Hardcore kind of music combined with a heavy sound and a solid production makes this release worth its money. Also the artwork is taken care off really well.
The thing is though, there aren’t any real highlights. All the songs on Black Friday 2009 are equally good (or bad as you might say). Also it reminds me of their current label mates Zero Mentality. I’ve known the latter band right from their first release and although I don’t know which band was the first, I personally tend to say that Zero Mentality is the more interesting one. The instrumental song with violins on the other hand proves that Black Friday ’29 definitely isn’t close-minded and tries to experiment now and then. All in all you just should give it a try and although this isn’t a classic, it will sure be enjoyable from time to time.
On a side note: I haven’t heard ZM’s new record Black Rock yet, so I can’t totally make a good comparison between the two bands at the moment.
