Grieving Age - In Aloof Lantern, Thy Bequeathed A Wailer Quietus
Saudi-Arabia is a country where you don’t expect to see a lot of metal. At least if you are closed minded. One who has seen the documentaries Global Metal and Heavy Metal in Bagdad knows that there is quite some activity in the Middle East regarding metal music. Grieving Age is one of those examples.

Grieving Age is a doom/death, or funeral doom metal band from Jeddah. They were formed in 2003 and have released a single and a demo in the following years. 2009 marks the release of their debut full length, with the huge title of In Aloof Lantern, Thy Bequeathed A Wailer Quietus. The record consists of two songs with equally lengthy titles, displaying some very fine doom metal music in the vein of My Dying Bride and such, but the thing which needs to be complimented is the excellent recording and mixing quality of the album. Everything is crystal-clear, and because of this the atmosphere this record breathes is very nice. You slowly get dragged into the record, something that happens quite rarely to me when listening to this type of doom.

I could be wrong, but I sort of get the feeling that one of the members’ father is like a rich oil sheik, for they hired none other than Dan Swanö for the mixing and mastering, while all the artwork was handled by MDB frontman Aaron Stainthorpe. Not your average Joe and Jack obviously. Yet this has worked out really well for them for the end-result is something to be proud of as a band. I cannot see why this would not appeal to any fan of doom/death metal, for the overall quality here is nicely above average. Check it out if you dig the style!
