Rhino Bucket - The Hardest Town
Old school rock ‘n roll band Rhino Bucket sounds promising: they’ve released a couple of singles that made it to the American top 40’s chart, appeared on several movie soundtracks (like Wayne’s World, The Wrestler), had a sold-out reunion gig in 2000, played at the Rocklahoma festival in 2007 and so on. The Hardest Town is their fifth album, and their second after a ten year period of no releases.

Well, I can be short about this album. If you listened to the first song, you’ve pretty much heard them all. Almost all the tracks are built up the same way, including the accompanying sing-along chorus with backing vocals. There’s not one of them that jumps out; they’re all on the same level. It’s not that this album has nothing to offer, it’s just that the sound isn’t very creative or inspirational. I don’t get much adrenaline out of this, it’s rather something you play on the background.

Okay, maybe I’m being too harsh on this record, because Rhino Bucket consists of good musicians (among them AD/DC / Dio drummerSimon Wright and ex-KIX guitarist Brian Forsythe). To me however being a good musician is not all about the execution of music, but about creativity, freshness and inspiration as well. I think for now fans of the genre had better keep listening to AC/DC and ZZ Top. I hope Rhino Bucket gets loose a bit more on their next album!
