Revocation - Existence Is Futile
In the year 2000 the band Cryptic Warning was formed in Boston, Massachusetts. This band released two demo records and one record. They then changed their style in such a way they decided to change their name into Revocation. This band released an EP and a full length record themselves before signing to Relapse Records. Now their second full length record has hit the streets entitled Existence Is Futile, let’s see what it’s all about.

Revocation is a band that likes to incorporate a shitload of different metal styles in their sound and mould it into a giant whole. The overall sound of the band is technical thrash with quite some death metal in it as well, but with a very well thought through way of song-writing. To be honest I really get the feeling I’m listening to old Metallica with a 20th century production and mixing job. This might also indicate you’re listening to another one of those shitty Trivium-like bands, and I have to say this is also partially true. Some of the melodic parts are taken just a bit too far to my liking, yet on the other hand who I am to complain.

In all honesty I have to say I like their previous record Empire Of The Obscene better, yet the differences between the two are quite minimal. In Revocation’s sound you can basically find influences from most style-defining metal bands of the previous century, but everything has been made their own in such a way you feel the sincerity and commitment of these guys. Existence Is Futile is surely a nice album for any fan of mainstream metal (without clean vocals that is), yet I really wonder what a label like Relapse wants with this band.
