Hellbastard - Eco-War/The Need To Kill
Hellbastard is an underground cult band from the U.K. that have invented the term ‘crust’ with their Ripper Crust demo in 1986. Actually Amebix are named as the inventors of the genre, but they never coined the term. This EP and full length mark the first recorded releases since their last full length in 2000. A best of compilation was released this year as well, but this is the first new material in almost ten years.

Hellbastard play a combination of crust/punk and thrash metal. Overall the sound is quite dirty, yet very groovy. The Eco War EP is a nice appetizer, but you can hear the band come to full fruition on the The Need To Kill full length. The EP is a nice collectors item for the fans, especially since it holds a cover of the Slayer song ‘Die By The Sword’. Also there is a weird extra track where somebody’s kid is ramming on the drums while the adults are laughing about it. Okay, fast forward to the full length, a thing that trademarks this band is weird intermezzos. Like a murdered talking as an intro, or a banjo being plucked. This makes the disc interesting to listen to, but it also pulls away some attention I feel.

Vocalist M.S. "Scruff" Lewty sounds like he smoked about a million packs of cigarettes, drank hundreds of thousands bottles of Scotch and partied every night. Just the thing those crusties need I’d say! Combined with their swinging punk/thrash groove I bet this band still turns the average squat into a hellhole! Yet I cannot help but feel that this stuff is kind of redundant in this day and age, and I don’t think many people will be waiting for these discs to fall into their lap. Nevertheless, another underground cult band is heard from again. So respect your elders and get yourself some crust music!
