Ancestors - Of Sound Mind
Ancestors is one of the many bands that will perform on next years’ Roadburn Festival, and they will do so in support of this new album entitled Of Sound Ruin, out on Tee Pee Records. The band has one album under its wing entitled Neptune With Fire, let’s see how this psychedelic stoner band does on their second effort.

To find the main comparisons given in the accompanying biography one doesn’t have to search very long. The three main components of the music Ancestors make can be traced back to the oeuvres of King Crimson, Pink Floyd and Neurosis. The seventies psychedelic rock music is heavily present throughout the whole record, while every once in a while they turn up the intensity a little bit, creating a nice mixture to space out to. The record consists of four songs that all exceed the thirteen minute barrier (the longest even going over seventeen minutes), all interrupted with a short interlude. It’s indeed a journey into space and sound.

Although personally I find the record to be a bit too hippie for me (especially due to frequent use of a Hammond organ), it is obvious these guys know what they’re doing. And they’re doing a great job on reviving some of the earliest spacey jam music and giving it a fresh sound while maintaining its integrity and vintage atmosphere. The record contains contributions by David Scott Stone (Melvins, Unwound, Slug), Sera Timms (Black Math Horsemen) and cellist Ramiro Zapata, who have helped in giving Of Sound Mind an even broader sound where possible. It was recorded, mixed and mastered at Infra Sonic Sound by Pete Lyman, known for his diverse work with Mars Volta, Qui and No Age. All these elements combined make Ancestors a more than worthy band to play at Roadburn 2010, and I for one will definitely check them out after smoking a big fat joint for sure! I suggest you do the same, if you are lucky enough to have tickets…
