Decayor - Recurring Times Of Grief
Formed in 2001, Decayor are an Irish doom/death metal band that have one demo record under their belt. Last year they released a new EP through Lugga Music, the label owned by ex-Mourning Beloveth/current Liquid Graveyard bassist Adrian de Buitléar. Also Decayor guitarist Pauric Gallagher joined Mourning Beloveth full time last year. Quite some accomplishments already, let’s see what Recurring Times Of Grief has to offer us.

It took me a while to really get through to Decayor’s sound on this disc, for their ability to vary in the song-writing area of doom/death or funeral doom metal is quite impressive. Where most bands suffice with playing slow riffs with emotional passages and depressing vocals, these guys like to offer the listener a new twist around every corner. Decayor of course also gets a lot of inspiration from the early legends of My Dying Bride, Anathema, Katatonia and the likes, yet still there is more to their sound. Especially vocal wise this band manages to give a range of impressions of which most bands only dare to dream.

Although the intro ‘Stir Of Echoes’ might imply otherwise, the sound of Decayor isn’t completely restricted to just funeral doom metal. As weird as it is, the last song ‘Weeping Willows’ has a riff in it that even reminds me of Neurosis, strangely enough. Needless to say Decayor offer more than just potential for the future. I’m curious to find out what happens when these lads bust out a full length record with a studio budget. Judging by this EP, magic might just happen in the future for these Irishmen. Keep it up!
