Try Drowning - A Different Kind Of Winter
One year ago we went to see a Textures show in Utrecht. One of the supporting bands was Try Drowning. Unfortunately we missed them but later on we gave them a listen at their site. That sounded very promising. It was a great surprise when their new EP fell on our doormat.
The first thing I noticed was the excellent and clear production. The CD credits reveal the productional cooperation of Jochem Jacobs (Textures) and Aart Stekelenburg (Face Tomorrow). Try Drowning has got elements of both bands in their sound. The Emo influenced rock of Face Tomorrow and the abstract soundscapes of Textures. Besides the good production the songwriting and the superb use of samples makes the sound of the band very mature. They are searching for adventure in their songwriting and choose beautiful vocal melodies over endless screaming.
The vocals are clearly influenced by Mike Patton; the parts with the vocal harmonies are very strong. The music is very diverse with both heavy outbursts and calm moments. A major part of the CD consists of electronic soundscapes; that is also a minor about this EP. There are too much soundscapes and too few real songs.
All in all Try Drowning put itself on the map with this EP and prove to have national potential. A Different Kind of Winter is a studio oriented record and I am curious if they are able to equal this on stage. But next time I get invited to a show I’ll definitely make sure that I’ll be on time!
